When to give a receipt
A receipt is proof that a customer has paid. It matters most for cash payments, deposits, refunds and anything a customer may need to claim back, such as business expenses. Customers who pay by card get a card slip, but many still want a proper receipt showing what they bought.
What to put on it
- Your business name, address and contact details
- A receipt number, so you can find it later
- The date the payment was made
- What was bought, with quantities and prices
- The total paid and how it was paid
- Your VAT number and the VAT amount, if you are VAT registered
Need to ask for payment instead?
Switch the document type to Invoice at the top of the form, or open our invoice generator. You can also make a quote for work that has not started yet.
