The brief

Kupo is a general store for the Hungarian market: shoes, home, kitchen, kids, electronics and more, with stock and prices managed by a warehouse ERP that pushes products into Shopify. The brief was a store that looks like the big Hungarian marketplaces shoppers already trust, loads fast on phones, and ranks for Hungarian product searches, without ever breaking the ERP sync.

What we built

A custom theme on a black and white brand with a lime accent. The homepage follows the layout Hungarian shoppers know: category sidebar, slider, deals row with a countdown, category tiles and product rows. On mobile it behaves like an app, with a bottom tab bar.

Features built by hand rather than installed as apps: a mega menu header, live search with product, category and query suggestions, a language switch between Hungarian and English, breadcrumbs, category chips, buying guides and FAQs on every collection, and structured data for the organisation, site search, breadcrumbs, FAQs and products. Kids’ shoes are single-size listings joined by a size switcher, because merging them would have broken the ERP sync.

Speed

PageSpeed Insights scores 99 on desktop and 92 on mobile, with every custom feature above in place. We got there by changing one thing at a time and measuring after each change. One lesson worth sharing: loading the cart drawer stylesheet asynchronously looked like a free win and cut the score instead, because it caused layout shift. We reverted it. Blanket optimisation plugins make that kind of change on every page at once, which is why we do not use them.

SEO

Keyword research in Hungarian produced 40 target terms and a keyword map for 40 subcategories. Every product got a sentence-case Hungarian title, a meta title under 60 characters, a meta description of 140 to 155 characters, a cleaned description and alt text on every image, with a full backup taken before any edit. Eleven departments and 40 subcategories each got an intro, a buying guide and FAQs, joined by 42 contextual internal links. Fifty-seven old collection URLs and 325 removed product URLs redirect to the right category. The English version was produced with Translate & Adapt, then checked by hand, which caught about 1,000 machine-translation errors in the brand name alone.

Rules we kept

The live theme was never edited directly. Every change went into a numbered duplicate, was previewed, and was published by the owner. Stock, prices and SKUs were never touched, because the ERP owns them. Those are the same rules we apply to every client store.
